2.  OM&M Trilectical Discussion:
  • Instructions:  You do not have DJ’s to work from today, but Of Mice and Men is a short novella and it should be fairly easy to find crucial quotes and passages to fuel discussion. I expect you to talk about yesterday’s essay prompt concerning the American Dream as it affects the characters in both Of Mice and Men and The Great Gatsby. I expect you talk about other social issues that arise in the novella, such as mercy killing and the mentally handicapped. And I expect you talk about other things that interested you. KEEP PLAY-BY-PLAY NOTES of the conversation, as that will be the only thing I have to go on for grading your discussion.

6/3/2008 Tuesday Agenda:

SUB DAY

1.  Answer the following questions re: Gatsby, on paper:

*Q1. Discuss what’s really going on during the confrontation in the hotel room. What is the subtext (not fully spelled out but there just the same) underlying what Tom, Gatsby, and Daisy say and do? Be specific.
*Q2. Identify the climax of the novel and justify your claim with evidence. (Remember that the climax is not just the highest point of emotional intensity but rather the turning point of the story action. It is the point at which the resolution has been fully set into motion.) In other words, when is Gatsby’s “dream” truly no longer possible?
